Dynamic performances by renowned classical musicians of fresh voices in chamber music.
DownEast New Music is a flexible chamber ensemble formed in 2023, becoming Maine’s first chamber ensemble expressly dedicated to the performance of contemporary chamber music. We operate with the belief that by combining conceptually coherent programs with world-class performances we will create meaningful connections between our audience and the music of today. By programming a new generation of composers like Mikhail Johnson and Gabriella Smith alongside seminal pieces like John Adams’ Shaker Loops and György Kurtág’s Scenes from a Novel, our thoughtful curation gives audiences a memorable performance like nothing they have ever experienced. As we expand to offer more commissioning and educational initiatives, we further our mission of showing chamber music as a living art form.
